Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant received a misdemeanor assault citation on Sunday after a traffic dispute turned into a physical confrontation. The incident occurred in a Southlake parking lot and involved two men, both 19 years old. Southlake police issued the citation for assault by contact, which is a Class C misdemeanor. Bryant was released at the scene without being booked.
The confrontation started on October 25 at 12:59 p.m. near the intersection of Kimball Avenue and Southlake Boulevard. Police responded to reports of a fight in a retail parking lot in the 2200 block of FM 1709. Dispatchers also received calls about a possible weapon. Officers arrived with their guns drawn as a precaution. No firearms were found at the scene.
Bryant, 37, told OutKick that another driver cut him off in traffic. He claimed one of the two young men threatened to shoot him. Both vehicles moved into the nearby parking lot, where the argument escalated. Bryant said the teenagers were the ones who initiated the conflict.
Noah Reyes and Terrance Avery gave a different account to NBC 5. They said they were driving to a restaurant after church. Reyes claimed Avery was honking his horn at him when he noticed Bryant in a nearby car. The two men denied cutting Bryant off or driving recklessly. They said they accelerated to turn into the parking lot when the light turned green.
Reyes and Avery stated that Bryant exited his SUV and confronted them in the lot. Avery said he tried to lower the temperature of the situation. He told NBC 5 that he never entered an argument with Bryant and was only trying to de-escalate. Reyes said he felt intimidated by the former receiver. He questioned why Bryant was picking on a 19-year-old.
Video footage provided to NBC 5 shows Bryant shouting at Reyes. The clip captures Bryant slapping a phone out of Reyes' hand. The teenagers allege that Bryant then picked up the device and threw it to the ground. They also rejected Bryant's claim that a shooting threat was made. Avery pointed out that they were leaving church and that they are not legally allowed to carry guns.
Police temporarily detained several people while they investigated the scene. Avery described the arrival of officers with drawn weapons as frightening. He said he feared for his life during the confrontation. Reyes said the entire moment was insane. Bryant has not responded to requests for comment regarding the teenagers' version of events.
The police report noted that multiple callers reported the fight. The two 19-year-olds, Reyes and Avery, are the individuals named in the video evidence. Bryant was cited for the assault by contact. The incident has ended with a formal police record against the former NFL star.
