918 people died in the Jonestown Massacre, a number that became the focal point of a confusing exchange on Fox News this morning. The figure surfaced not from a historian or a policy expert, but from a man named Tom speaking to a camera in South Carolina.
The incident occurred during a live report from a midterm rally held Thursday. Fox News correspondent Lucas Y. Tomlinson was interviewing Tom to learn why the man had traveled to the event. Tom stated that in the late 1970s, he was too young to travel to South America for the massacre. He claimed the rally was as close as he would ever get to the event.
Tomlinson appeared stunned by the comment and asked the man to confirm he meant the 1978 mass murder-suicide led by Jim Jones. Tom replied, 'That's right,' and added, 'There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front.'
Tomlinson quickly moved away from the microphone, turning to the camera and saying, 'Alright. So maybe this is not a Trump supporter.' He then wandered toward another group of attendees to continue the broadcast.
The rally featured President Donald Trump campaigning for Republican Senate candidate Darline Graham. She is the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. The race against Democrat Annie Andrews is currently close.
