Josh O'Connor’s latest role will reach moviegoers in a new format. National Theatre Live is releasing a filmed version of 'Golden Boy' in cinemas starting Nov. 5. The production previously played to sold-out houses at London's Almeida Theatre.
The play marks O'Connor's first return to the London stage in five years. During that absence, he won an Emmy for his portrayal of King Charles in Netflix's 'The Crown.' He has also appeared in 'La Chimera,' 'Challengers,' 'Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man,' and Steven Spielberg's 'Disclosure Day.'
The production is directed by Sam Yates and is based on the play by Clifford Odets. O'Connor plays Joe Bonaparte, a young violinist who enters professional boxing. The official synopsis describes the character as facing choices about fame and fortune.
An exclusive clip shows the character grappling with his musical past. In the footage, O'Connor embraces a version of himself playing the violin while his face bleeds from a boxing injury. The footage was captured during a live performance at the Almeida Theatre.
The cast includes Hayley Squires and Daniel Mays. A live string quartet also performs in the production. The film will screen in theaters around the world from Nov. 5. Tickets are available through the National Theatre Live website.
