Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley both left a Monday night game against the Buffalo Bills with injuries, leaving the Baltimore Ravens without their top two quarterbacks for the remainder of the contest. The double blow forced Joe Fagnano, the team's emergency third quarterback, to enter the game for his professional debut.
The injury to Jackson occurred on the very first offensive play of the game. The two-time MVP dropped back to throw, and his right hand collided with Bills safety Greg Rousseau during the follow-through. Jackson initially jogged off the field with his hand motionless. The Ravens listed him as questionable before ruling him out several minutes later. Head coach Jesse Minter confirmed after the game that Jackson requires surgery and will be placed on the injured reserve list.
Tyler Huntley, who had started the previous three games while Jackson recovered from a high ankle sprain, suffered his own injury midway through the second quarter. With the Ravens trailing 13-7, Huntley twisted a toe while being tackled by Ed Oliver. He was ruled out for the game at halftime, ceding the starting role to Fagnano.
Fagnano, 25, went undrafted out of UConn in April and had never played a snap in the NFL before this week. On his first possession, he completed two passes for 28 yards, finishing the drive with a missed 34-yard field goal attempt by Tyler Loop. For the full game, Fagnano completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards and threw one interception in a 36-10 defeat.
The Ravens now sit with a 4-3 record. The loss of both Jackson and Huntley for the rest of the season could impact the team's standing in the AFC North. The next opportunity for either quarterback to return to the field is Thursday night, when Baltimore hosts the Jacksonville Jaguars.
