The Baltimore Ravens lost both of their starting quarterbacks in the first half of their Week 8 match against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Lamar Jackson exited on the team's first offensive play, and backup Tyler Huntley left in the second quarter. The team turned to third-string option Joe Fagnano, an undrafted free agent out of UConn.
Jackson, returning from an ankle injury, hit his thumb on Bills linebacker Gregory Rousseau and walked to the locker room. Huntley, who has started the previous three games while Jackson recovered, suffered a turf toe injury when his foot was rolled by Bills defensive end Ed Oliver. Huntley is listed as questionable to return.
Fagnano completed five of eight passes for 50 yards and threw one interception in his NFL debut. He is a 25-year-old who began his college career as a walk-on at Maine in 2019. He earned a scholarship after the starter was injured and threw five touchdown passes in his first collegiate start against Liberty.
His college path was interrupted by a shortened 2020 season and an injury in 2021. He transferred to UConn after a solid 2022 season. A season-ending shoulder injury limited his time in 2023, but he played most of 2024. In 2025, he recorded 28 passing touchdowns, one interception, and 3,448 passing yards.
Fagnano earned a spot on the Ravens roster after beating Diego Pavia at a rookie tryout. He posted a nearly 75% completion rate with three touchdowns and one interception in the preseason. He now enters the game as Baltimore attempts to stop a two-game losing streak.
According to the CBS broadcast, running back Justice Hill will serve as the backup if Fagnano also gets injured.
