No. 1 Miami visits North Carolina on Saturday to face a team that has never beaten the national champion.
The Hurricanes are 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play. They lead the Bowl Subdivision in total offense with 551.9 yards per game and average 49.0 points per game. Their passing attack features Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney. Miami’s last two close victories came against Florida State in double overtime and against Wake Forest, where they secured multiple stops in the fourth quarter. The Tar Heels are 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. They lost at home to Syracuse in overtime last week. Syracuse was 0-4 in the league at that time. North Carolina is 0-11 all-time against the No. 1-ranked team.
North Carolina is in its second year under head coach Bill Belichick. The defense has been the most consistent unit for the Tar Heels. The offense has not scored more than 27 points in regulation against any FBS opponent during Belichick’s tenure. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
Virginia faces No. 14 Wake Forest on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The Demon Deacons are 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference. They had a week off before this matchup. Wake Forest plays its first of two home games before visiting No. 19 SMU on November 14. The Cavaliers are 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference. They lost to SMU and Duke in the previous two weeks after starting the season 4-2.
Clemson travels to Florida State on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on the ACC Network. The Tigers are 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference. They recently lost at home to Virginia Tech. Florida State is 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Seminoles had an open week following their 43-35 loss to Miami on October 17.
N.C. State hosts California on Saturday. This is the first game since the firing of longtime coach Dave Doeren. Third-year starting quarterback CJ Bailey said he is focused on doing the next positive thing for the team. The Wolfpack are under interim coach Todd Goebbel. Syracuse hosts SMU on Saturday. Running back Ahmad Miller rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown in a loss to Louisville. He followed that with 125 yards and a score in the overtime win at UNC. Miller carried the ball 48 times in the last two games. Quarterback Steve Angeli returned to the starting lineup against UNC.
Duke’s Nate Sheppard is no longer leading the country in rushing. He had receiving games near 100 yards in losses to Georgia Tech and UNC. He threw the winning touchdown pass against Virginia last week. Stanford has won all four of its games at home. That includes last week’s win over N.C. State, which contributed to Doeren’s departure. Stanford has scored a total of 17 points in three road losses. The Cardinal visits Louisville on Saturday. Pittsburgh has not won since starting quarterback Mason Heintschel suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Panthers were 5-0 and ranked in the AP Top 25 before losing three straight. They host Georgia Tech on Saturday. Virginia Tech is idle this week.
