Pat Murphy walked off the field in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Wednesday night as a World Series champion. At 67 years old, he guided the Milwaukee Brewers to their first franchise title, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in five games. This victory caps a season where Murphy, a manager known for his blunt style, has once again proven his longevity in the sport.

Murphy’s path to the podium was interrupted by a medical emergency in 2020. During a workout at American Family Field in Milwaukee, he suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. He recalled the driver asking for his next of kin. Murphy responded, “Bro, next of kin? I’m not going anywhere.”

The manager has been with the Brewers since 2016, when he joined as a bench coach under Craig Counsell. He assumed the managerial role in November 2023 after Counsell moved to the Chicago Cubs. In his first full season in the job, Murphy led the team to a World Series win. He is now eligible to become the first person to win three consecutive Manager of the Year awards if the season continues as projected.

Players describe Murphy as a mix of charm and strictness. Outfielder Garrett Mitchell noted that the team operates on an “iron-sharpens-iron” mentality. Mitchell added that players must be able to take the punches Murphy delivers. Murphy enforces accountability by removing players who do not run with full effort. He pulled infielders Cooper Pratt and William Contreras from games this year for that reason.

Brewers owner Mark Attanasio said Murphy excels at delivering tough love when necessary. Murphy instituted a system called “The Check Game” in 2016. A white board tracks checks given to players, staff, or the owner for displaying ego instead of selflessness. Murphy said he gave Attanasio a check for wearing a large Brewers logo on his private plane. Attanasio accepted the criticism in good fun.

Murphy’s career began in college coaching after a brief stint in professional baseball. He pitched 11 complete games at Florida Atlantic University in 1981 and 1982. He signed with the San Francisco Giants but was released due to a shoulder injury before playing a game. He spent time in the San Diego Padres’ minor league system and in independent leagues in Australia and the Northwest League.

He became a head coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and later at Notre Dame and Arizona State. He won exactly 1,000 college games. The NCAA issued him a one-year restriction on coaching in 2010 for failing to promote compliance. Murphy said he felt a sense of injustice at the time but now views that period as essential for his growth. He raised his son alone during that stretch.

Murphy has a family that includes four children and three ex-wives. His daughter Keli is married to former major leaguer Pedro Alvarez. His son Kai plays in the San Diego Padres’ minor league system. Murphy often brings his youngest children and their friends to post-game press conferences. He recently FaceTimed Bruce Springsteen during a media session, a move he said was prompted by a question about his tattoos.

The Brewers’ next step is to formally recognize the championship. Murphy, who is a month away from turning 68, remains focused on the team’s development. He described himself as a “check master” who has never given himself a check mark. He stated that he is still under construction and enjoys the ongoing process of improvement.

The victory over Tampa Bay marks the end of a five-game series. Murphy left the ballpark a winner. He plans to return to Milwaukee to celebrate with the organization. The team will begin preparations for the offseason shortly after the final game.
