Texas state representative Ron Reynolds presented musician Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, with a Global Icon Award on Halloween 2026. Reynolds delivered the state-sponsored honor at Reliant Stadium in Houston following a sold-out concert that attracted 80,210 fans. The event marked a breaking of the United States attendance record for a stadium rap concert. The presentation occurred on stage, where Reynolds told the audience that a flag flown over the Texas Capitol in Austin was dedicated to the musician. He stated that the state was honored to have Ye in Houston while showing the artist respect.

Reynolds, a Democrat representing the Fort Bend County area, is the first Black state representative from that district. He has previously faced scrutiny for a 2015 misdemeanor conviction involving the illegal solicitation of legal clients, a case that resulted in his disbarment as an attorney. His office did not respond to inquiries regarding the specific criteria used for the award. The recognition has prompted questions about why the state would formally recognize an artist with a history of public controversy. Critics note that Ye has made racist and antisemitic remarks for much of the last decade. He has also used imagery associated with white supremacy, including KKK robes and swastikas, to sell merchandise.

The concert featured a surprise appearance by Houston rapper Travis Scott, who is a protégé of Ye. Drake, who resides in Texas, watched the performance from a suite at the stadium. The show was part of a recent tour that demonstrated sustained fan support for the musician. Over the past two years, Ye has worked to rehabilitate his public image. His recent stadium sellouts have reinforced his commercial strength despite his history. Specific past controversies include statements describing slavery as a choice and tweets declaring an admiration for Hitler.

This instance follows a similar event in September when U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett of Dallas presented singer Chris Brown with a comparable state award. Crockett presented the honor on stage during Brown's performance. That event also drew criticism due to Brown's history of domestic violence. The two occurrences have intensified debate over whether state legislators should use formal recognitions to honor artists with contentious pasts. Reynolds described the moment as a display of "mad love and respect" from the city of Houston. The award ceremony took place immediately after the concert concluded, allowing the musician to accept the honor in front of the large crowd.
