María Corina Machado returned to Venezuela on Sunday.
The opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner arrived at a church in Lara State after spending nearly a year in exile. A group of supporters gathered to greet her with applause and hugs. Machado announced her arrival on social media, stating, “I am here. With you.”
Edmundo González Urrutia, a fellow opposition figure, confirmed the move. He described the return as a vital step for the nation's democratic future. He also said he plans to rejoin Machado in Venezuela soon.
This is Machado's first public appearance on Venezuelan soil since December. She went into hiding in that month after a brief detention during anti-government protests. She spent the following eleven months abroad seeking support for a democratic transition. Previous attempts to return home were blocked by denied landing permissions in neighboring Caribbean territories.
The political situation in Caracas changed while she was away. U.S. military forces ousted former President Nicolás Maduro in January. He was flown to New York to face federal drug charges. Delcy Rodríguez, a longtime official in the ruling party, became interim president with backing from Washington.
Criticism has grown as the interim administration passed its original timeframe without setting a date for presidential elections. Machado's coalition is pressuring the government to establish a firm electoral timeline. The opposition demands a swift return to the polls, safe passage for exiles, and the release of political prisoners. U.S. diplomats have focused on economic stabilization before voting.
President Donald Trump spoke to reporters on Sunday about the development. He noted that he was unfamiliar with the specific details of her return. He expressed warm sentiments toward Machado and voiced hope for her safety.
