Greg Abbott leads Gina Hinojosa by three percentage points in the Texas governor's race, according to a new survey. The poll found 50% of likely voters intend to support the incumbent Republican, while 47% back the Democratic challenger. One percent of respondents said they were unsure.
The data comes from the Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center at Texas Southern University. Researchers surveyed 2,000 likely Texas voters from October 21 to 25. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.19 percent.
The race remains tight in favorability metrics. Forty-eight percent of respondents viewed Abbott favorably. Hinojosa received a favorable rating from 45 percent of the group. Independents showed a preference for the Democrat, breaking for Hinojosa by 11 points.
Voter intent varied by demographic groups. Most White voters and men preferred Abbott. Most Latino and Black voters backed Hinojosa. Women also supported the Democrat. Age played a role as well, with Hinojosa leading among younger voters and Abbott holding a substantial lead with older voters.
The electorate included 40 percent Republicans and 31 percent Democrats. Twenty-four percent identified as independents. Four percent affiliated with another party, and 1 percent were unsure of their affiliation.
Early voting in Texas ends Friday. Polls will open at 7 a.m. on Election Day Tuesday.
