CFP Committee Releases Initial 12-Team Ranking
Miami leads an undefeated slate, but the committee faces a difficult field with multiple power teams having multiple losses.

The College Football Playoff selection committee released its first official ranking on Tuesday, November 3, at 6 p.m. Central Time on ESPN.
The 13-member panel evaluated games played over the past two months to determine the initial standings for the 12-team bracket. This first reveal is part of a series of six rankings scheduled before Selection Sunday in December. The process determines which teams secure the five automatic bids and the seven at-large spots in the field.
Miami enters the initial rankings as the top choice. The team is currently undefeated and is expected to claim one of the four first-round byes. The remaining positions in the bracket are less clear, as several major programs have suffered multiple losses this season.
Texas is among the teams with uncertain status. The Longhorns were excluded from the playoff field in 2025, but they remain in the conversation for this cycle. Alabama also made the 12-team bracket last year despite having three losses. That precedent offers optimism for the SEC, where all but two teams have more than one conference loss.
The structure of the tournament allocates four automatic bids to the champions of the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC. A fifth automatic bid goes to the highest-ranked team from the Group of Five conferences, which includes the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12, and Sun Belt. The other seven teams are selected based on their placement in the committee's rankings.
Higher-seeded at-large teams will host first-round games. In the 2024 season, Texas hosted Clemson in such a matchup. Winners of the first round will face the top four seeds on New Year's Eve or Day. Those games will be played in the Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Rose Bowl.
The semifinals are set for January 14 and 15 at the Fiesta Bowl and Peach Bowl. The national championship game will take place on January 25, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
