St. Charles Parish deputies fired at an 84-year-old man on Halloween night after he refused to lower a shotgun and aimed it at them. The man, identified as Herman Alexander, was taken into custody without further incident following the exchange.

Police reported that officers responded to the Charlestowne subdivision in St. Rose around 9:30 p.m. on October 31. Residents had reported a suspicious individual walking the neighborhood and pointing a shotgun at them. Deputies located Alexander near the intersection of W. Club Drive and River Birch Lane. Officers ordered him to drop the firearm multiple times, but he did not comply and pointed the weapon directly at the deputies.

The officers discharged their weapons at Alexander, causing him to fall to the ground. Deputies immediately rushed to his side to provide aid. They determined that he sustained no gunshot injuries during the encounter.

Records show Alexander has no prior criminal history. However, police noted a May 2026 incident where deputies responded to his home for an apparent mental health episode. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation at that time.

Alexander remains in custody as of November 1. Deputies have not yet filed formal charges against him. They indicated that charges are forthcoming.
