Traffic on the eastbound side of the Katy Freeway faces a major disruption tonight as Houston TranStar shuts down five lanes and a critical connector ramp. The closure targets the segment between Silber Road and the direct link to the I-610 West Loop and U.S. 290. Drivers must plan for a significant change in their route starting at 9 p.m. today.
The construction schedule lists this overnight window as the designated time for the work. The five eastbound lanes on I-10 will be out of service from 9 p.m. Thursday, October 29, until 5 a.m. Friday. During this eight-hour period, the specific connector ramp that usually allows direct access to the West Loop and U.S. 290 will also be completely closed.
The detour adds considerable distance for commuters. Instead of taking the closed ramp, eastbound drivers must continue on I-10 to Exit 764. From there, they are instructed to make a U-turn and then take Exit 762B to reach the I-610. TranStar describes this as the required path for anyone attempting to reach the West Loop or U.S. 290 during the closure.
The agency notes that the schedule is subject to weather conditions. Construction closures may be canceled or altered if adverse weather or other circumstances arise. Drivers should check for updates before heading out, as the plan relies on clear conditions for the overnight work.
This closure is part of a routine maintenance schedule for the freeway. The specific dates and times are set to minimize daytime traffic impact, though the overnight timing affects commuters finishing late shifts or starting early ones. The work is scheduled to conclude by 5 a.m. Friday, restoring normal traffic flow to the affected lanes.
