The NBA has deepened its financial ties to prediction markets at a moment when its own players are under legal scrutiny for betting misconduct. On Monday, the league unveiled agreements with Kalshi and Polymarket, labeling them as preferred partners. It also expanded its existing contract with DraftKings to include prediction markets and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to govern these relationships.
These moves come as the league battles a series of integrity issues. Jontay Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in 2024 regarding a gambling scheme. Malik Beasley is currently negotiating a plea deal for similar offenses. Former player Terry Rozier and coach Chauncey Billups have been indicted on charges of rigging prop bets and participating in manipulated poker games, respectively.
Scott Kaufman-Ross, the league's head of media distribution and partnerships, stated that protecting the integrity of the game is the top priority. The new framework grants prediction market operators access to official league data and intellectual property. In return, the operators agree to limit permissible markets and share information about suspicious trades and ongoing investigations.
The information-sharing clause appears designed to address concerns about insider trading. Prediction markets have recently seen activity linked to non-sports events, including US military operations in Venezuela and details of a presidential teleprompter. State attorneys general are already challenging the industry. New York Attorney General Letitia James is one of several officials suing Kalshi and other platforms.
Simultaneously, Senate investigators are examining how companies like DraftKings use artificial intelligence to target gamblers likely to lose while restricting bets from those who win. The NBA said it will announce further expansions with other partners in the near future.
