President Donald Trump told a crowd in Port Huron, Michigan, that Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed would be the first senator to pass through a metal detector. Speaking on Sunday, the President suggested the candidate’s victory would lead to the cancellation of Christmas. He made the remarks while rallying supporters for the November 3 midterm elections.

Trump described El-Sayed as a jihadist and a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. He claimed the candidate intended to bring Islamic law to the United States. Trump stated that if El-Sayed succeeded in that goal, he should be the first person tried and that he would serve as a witness. Crowd members shouted traitor when the candidate’s name was mentioned.

El-Sayed is a US-born citizen and former public health official. He has denied membership in the Muslim Brotherhood or other foreign organizations. The President had previously referred to the candidate by the name Mohammed. El-Sayed has characterized these attacks as distractions from issues like living costs and healthcare access.

The race pits El-Sayed against Republican Mike Rogers. They are competing for the seat vacated by retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. Republicans currently hold 53 seats in the Senate. A win for Rogers would force Democrats to flip five other seats to regain control. Only 35 seats are on the ballot this year.

Rogers joined Trump on stage despite previously calling for an end to the Iran war. He also criticized the tariff campaign, including trade disputes with Canada. A recent survey by Marketing Resource Group found that only 35 percent of Michigan voters view Trump favorably. Rogers linked El-Sayed to the Muslim Brotherhood and the Democratic Socialists of America, though El-Sayed is not a member of the latter group.

Trump defended the war with Iran, which began on February 28. He initially predicted a four to six week conflict, but it has now lasted nearly eight months. Michigan’s average gas price reached $4.83 per gallon on Sunday, up from $2.91 before the war started. Trump claimed US oil companies are making hundreds of billions of dollars from the crisis. He said Iran had to be stopped from obtaining a nuclear weapon, a claim Iran has denied.

The rally took place in a hockey arena that filled with supporters wearing MAGA gear. A line of attendees stretched several blocks. Trump also made remarks about the appearance of Ohio Senator Jon Husted and rapper Nicki Minaj, who attended as a supporter. The crowd applauded these comments.
