Canelo Alvarez steps into the ring as a title challenger on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, seeking to reclaim a world championship from Christian Mbilli. The fight airs on DAZN pay-per-view, with the bell scheduled to ring at 1 p.m. ET. This marks Alvarez's first time entering a title bout as the non-champion since his May 2022 loss to Dmitry Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight belt.

Mbilli holds the WBC super middleweight title with a record of 29-0-1 and 24 knockouts. He captured the interim belt in June 2025 by defeating Maciej Sulecki, then survived a split decision draw with Lester Martinez in September. The WBC stripped Terence Crawford of the full title in January, elevating Mbilli to undisputed champion status. Alvarez, who lost to Crawford in September 2025, looks to reverse that result and regain a piece of the super middleweight division's crown.

Bookmakers favor Alvarez despite his age and the champion's undefeated status. DraftKings lists Alvarez at -330 to win the bout and -135 to win by decision or technical decision. The odds swing sharply against the champion in specific scenarios, with +10,000 listed for Mbilli to win in the first three rounds. Conversely, Alvarez winning in Round 8 or 9 carries odds of +2000.

The two fighters have no common opponents in their combined 98 professional bouts, and neither has ever been knocked down. Alvarez, who turned pro at 15 in October 2005, has fought in 28 major title fights, winning 25. Mbilli has competed twice for interim titles but has never defended a full world championship. Both men have waited 13 months since their last appearances, with Mbilli's draw occurring on the undercard of the Crawford fight in Las Vegas.

CompuBox data reveals contrasting fighting styles. Mbilli averages 78 punches per round, a figure 27 punches above the division average of 51. He throws 57.7 power punches per round and lands 26.6, which is 16.2 more than the division average. Alvarez is far more selective, averaging 35.1 punches per round. While he lands fewer total punches, his power punch accuracy sits at 44.9% over 12 rounds, compared to Mbilli's 46.1%. Both rates exceed the division average of 36.1%.

Defensive metrics suggest Alvarez may have an edge in absorbing damage. Opponents land 5.3 power punches per round against Alvarez, a figure that ranks eighth best in the division. In contrast, Lester Martinez landed 49% of his power punches against Mbilli in their recent meeting. Alvarez's opponents manage only a 31.2% landing rate, the sixth best among super middleweight contenders and champions.

The jab serves as a weak point for both boxers. Mbilli lands 3.8 jabs per round out of 20.3 thrown, resulting in an 18.7% accuracy rate. Alvarez lands 3.5 jabs per round out of 15.5 thrown, for a 22.6% rate. Both figures fall below the division average of 4.2 jabs landed per round, indicating neither fighter relies heavily on that weapon to control range or set up combinations.
