Denver Broncos fans now hold the top spot in the AFC West after a 28-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The win ended a four-game winning streak for Denver and gave them a head-to-head advantage over their division rivals. The result also secured a 6-2 record for the Broncos, a mark that exceeds their initial expectations for the season.

The game featured a dramatic shift in momentum. The Chiefs led by 11 points late in the fourth quarter. Denver quarterback Bo Nix, who had struggled earlier in the contest, led a final drive to take the lead. The Broncos defense sealed the win with a goal-line stop in the final seconds.

The path to this result involved a difficult start for Denver. The team lost its first two games. It then faced a tough schedule that included the Chiefs, Jaguars, Rams, 49ers, and Seahawks. Despite these early setbacks, the Broncos have won four consecutive games.

Bo Nix's performance was inconsistent until the final minutes. Through three quarters, he completed 15 of 26 passes for 153 yards. He converted only one third down out of eight attempts. In the fourth quarter, his statistics changed dramatically. He completed five of six passes for 84 yards. Those two touchdown passes, one to Nate Adkins and one to Jonah Coleman, were decisive.

Since entering the league in 2024, Nix has recorded 15 game-winning drives. That is the most for any quarterback in their first three seasons. He also has 12 fourth-quarter comebacks, a mark tied with Derek Carr for the most in that timeframe. The Broncos have averaged 8.1 points per fourth quarter under his leadership, the highest rate for a starting quarterback since 1950.

The Chiefs' offense performed well for most of the game but faltered in critical moments. Patrick Mahomes completed 30 of 41 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns. He threw no interceptions. However, the team missed a field goal attempt from 50 yards out with under three minutes remaining. Harrison Butker missed the kick wide right. He is now 2 for 7 on field goals from 50 yards or longer this season.

The Chiefs' receiving corps struggled to provide a deep threat. Running back Emmett Johnson led the team with five catches for 128 yards. Wide receiver Rashee Rice had seven catches for 53 yards. Kansas City has not completed a pass of 20 yards or more in the last three games. This is the longest such streak of Mahomes' career. The team faces a need to add a player who can stretch the field vertically.

Both teams found success with their young running backs. Jonah Coleman led the Broncos with 11 carries for 41 yards and added 63 receiving yards. He also scored the winning touchdown. Emmett Johnson contributed 128 receiving yards, a 15-yard run, and a 44-yard kick return for the Chiefs. Both players have emerged as primary options for their respective teams this season.
