The Miami Heat secured a crucial victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, winning 117-116 in overtime. The decisive moment came with one second remaining in the extra period when Klay Thompson hit a game-winning three-pointer from the left corner. This shot completed a dramatic 20-point comeback for the Heat, who had been trailing significantly earlier in the contest.

The final play of the game unfolded quickly. Heat center Bam Adebayo set a screen on the baseline, allowing Thompson to get wide open on the perimeter. Giannis Antetokounmpo inbounded the ball to Thompson, who turned and released the shot before Clippers guard Kobe Sanders could recover his defensive position. The ball swished through the net, sending the Miami bench into a jubilant celebration after Sanders missed a desperation heave at the final buzzer.

Thompson, who was 36 years old at the time of the game, scored 30 points for the Heat. He also made eight three-pointers, a personal milestone for him. This marked the first time since December 2023 that he had made eight three-pointers in a single game, a feat he last accomplished while still playing for the Golden State Warriors. Thompson, a four-time NBA champion, currently ranks fourth in league history for total three-pointers made.

The veteran forward signed with the Heat during the summer free agency period. He joined Miami after reaching a buyout agreement with the Dallas Mavericks. His performance on the court has been a bright spot for a team that started the season with four losses. The win improved the Heat's record to 3-5, providing much-needed momentum during a rocky start to their campaign.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra praised Thompson's physical preparation and skill. He noted that Thompson is fighting against age by dedicating significant time to his body and conditioning. This effort allows him to display the same skill set that defined his Hall of Fame career. Spoelstra emphasized that the team is still putting pieces together following a blockbuster trade for Antetokounmpo in July, but the recent display of grit was impressive.

The victory was not without controversy. In the final seconds of regulation, Miami challenged a foul call on Pelle Larsson. While the challenge was successful, officials determined that Adebayo had also committed a defensive foul during the sequence. As a result, Clippers forward Rui Hachimura was awarded two free throws. Hachimura missed the first attempt but sank the second, sending the game into overtime.

Antetokounmpo credited his teammates for the final play. He highlighted the quality of Adebayo's screen and Thompson's execution. The forward expressed confidence in Thompson's shooting ability, stating that whenever the veteran takes a shot, the expectation is that it will go in. The coordinated effort between the two players proved to be the difference in a tight contest.

The Heat's second-half defensive effort was a key factor in the comeback. After falling behind by 20 points, Miami tightened up its defense and relied on Thompson's shooting to pull even. The team's resilience was evident as they overcame a significant deficit to take the lead in the final seconds of regulation and ultimately win the game in overtime.

Spoelstra expressed satisfaction with the team's mental toughness. He mentioned that the players had earned their composure in high-pressure situations, a trait that had been lacking earlier in the season. The coach believed that the defensive intensity and grit displayed in the second half were the reasons the team finally found success, turning the tide of a difficult game.
