For investors tracking the electric vehicle giant, the third quarter report released after market close on October 21 indicated a stabilization in top-line sales but a continued squeeze on bottom-line profits. The company generated $28.05 billion in revenue, which aligned almost perfectly with the $28.06 billion expected by Wall Street analysts. This figure was essentially flat compared to the same period last year. While the revenue stability is a relief, the profit picture remains mixed as the firm navigates a period of heavy capital expenditure.

The most significant financial shift this quarter was the rebound in margins. Automotive gross margin, excluding regulatory credits, climbed to 18.1%. This marks a substantial improvement from the 16.3% recorded in the second quarter and the 15.4% seen a year ago. Management attributed this improvement to a better regional mix, higher FSD subscription revenue, and favorable product positioning. However, total gross margin stood at 19.6%, up 160 basis points from the prior year period.

Despite the margin recovery, operating income fell sharply by 56% year-over-year to $718 million. This decline is primarily driven by a 39% jump in operating expenses to $4.78 billion. Research and development costs surged 69% to $2.76 billion as the company accelerates work on its Optimus robot, Cybercab, and what it now terms Super Intelligence. Stock-based compensation also rose significantly to $1.17 billion, reflecting the 2025 CEO pay package.

Capital spending reached $4.73 billion, more than double the amount spent in the same quarter last year. This aggressive investment pace has slowed free cash flow to $1.53 billion, down from $3.99 billion a year ago. The company ended the quarter with $45.4 billion in cash and investments. GAAP net income decreased 43% to $787 million, or $0.22 per share, though this was buffered by a $288 million unrealized gain on bitcoin holdings. Non-GAAP earnings of $0.48 per share beat the $0.45 consensus estimate but remained 4% lower than the year-ago figure.

In terms of operations, Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles, a 2.1% year-over-year decline but a beat against the consensus estimate. The company cited battery availability as the primary constraint on volume growth, noting a four-year high in passenger vehicle backlog. Energy storage revenue fell 16% to $2.88 billion due to tariff-related refunds, while the services segment saw a 33% revenue increase to $4.61 billion. With nine months of capital spending totaling $13.01 billion against a full-year target of over $25 billion, the fourth quarter will require a massive spending push to meet management's original guidance.
