Katie Suarez, a 28-year-old woman training for the New York City Marathon, was stabbed in the neck on Friday night near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue. She remains in critical condition, according to the New York Police Department.
Suarez was jogging along the path shortly after 8 p.m. when the attack occurred. Her father found her after she failed to return home. Police have not released a suspect or stated a motive.
The investigation covers the eastbound bike path along the Belt Parkway between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street. Detectives are asking witnesses to report activity observed between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. Friday.
Authorities are deploying K-9 units, scuba teams, drones, and a Crime Stoppers truck to aid the search. Flowers and candles now sit outside Suarez's residence.
State Senator Steve Chan is requesting more lighting for the area. He noted that new wires were installed during a foot bridge reconstruction but said additional fixtures are needed. "I know there's going to be a couple lights on this side, but they need more," Chan said.
Local residents reported feeling shaken by the incident. One neighbor described the event as terrible because it happened so close to home. Another said they would now watch their surroundings more carefully during evening runs.
