Ukraine’s war of attrition continues to take a heavy toll on the country’s youngest residents, with a new casualty report confirming the death of a fifth-grader in central Ukraine. The incident occurred in the city of Koziatyn, located in Vinnytsia Oblast, where a Russian drone struck an area near temporary housing for internally displaced persons.

Arina Pidruchna, who turned 13 in May 2013, was killed in the attack on November 1. The projectile targeted an educational institution, specifically Lyceum No. 2, a specialized secondary school. The impact site was close to a shop where Arina was scheduled to meet a friend. Local authorities stated that she was on the phone at the time of the strike, and her final words were an observation of the incoming aircraft, which she identified as a Shahed drone.

Arina was a student in the fifth grade at the time of her death. She had moved to Koziatyn for her secondary education after completing primary school in the village of Nepedivka. Her academic record included top grades in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, and she regularly received prizes in academic competitions. The Lyceum No. 2 administration described her as an outstanding student and class monitor who was known for her cheerful and compassionate nature.

Outside of the classroom, Arina participated in a Pentecostal Sunday school in Koziatyn. On the day of the attack, her routine included attending church with her mother and joining a humanities club. The Hlukhivtsi territorial hromada, her local administrative unit, noted that she was sociable and had a close relationship with her younger brother, Arsen. Her family had resided in Nepedivka, where she also completed a mental arithmetic course with distinction at a private school in Berdychiv.

The death of Arina Pidruchna adds to a recent series of casualties involving school-aged children in western and central Ukraine. On October 29, a Russian cruise missile strike in central Chernihiv killed two 15-year-old classmates, Yana Pieshkova and Mariia Mozhova. On the same day, a strike on Kremenchuk resulted in the death of a mother, identified only as Anna, who shielded her two children with her body before the impact.

The funeral for Arina Pidruchna is scheduled to take place in the coming days, with the specific date and time to be announced by her family and local officials. The strikes in Koziatyn, Chernihiv, and Kremenchuk occurred within a 48-hour period, illustrating the geographic spread of recent Russian aerial attacks on populated areas.

The loss of Arina, a student described by her school as a loyal friend and exceptional scholar, underscores the personal cost of the conflict on Ukraine’s educational community. Her death joins those of other young students killed in the past month, prompting local administrators and families to seek closure while continuing to manage the aftermath of the strikes.
