The NFL and Apple Music announced on Monday that Jay-Z will headline the 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Show. The reveal occurred during a live broadcast of the game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles. This marks the first time the rapper has performed in the role, ending years of speculation regarding his plans for the event.
The news confirmed earlier reports from Puck, which cited industry sources. The social media post featured a black-and-white video of the 25-time Grammy winner holding a goat in the stands. The audio track played the opening line of his song "Public Service Announcement (Interlude)": "Allow me to reintroduce myself." The caption read "GOAT's out of the bag."
Roc Nation, Jay-Z's entertainment company, has partnered with the NFL to produce the halftime show since 2019. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated that he witnessed the "extraordinary impact" the rapper has had on the production. Goodell noted that when the league first agreed to the partnership, he made one specific request: that Jay-Z perform himself when the moment felt right.
Super Bowl 61 is scheduled for Feb. 14 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The event will air on ESPN, ABC, and Disney+, with mobile access through NFL+. The selection follows the conclusion of Jay-Z's 30 Tour, which commemorated three decades since his debut album "Reasonable Doubt." The tour included stops in Paris, London, and New York City, with its final two shows held at the same venue as the upcoming Super Bowl.
In a statement released Monday, Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, described the opportunity as a continuation of a dream. He said, "From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey. Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true." It is not yet known if Beyoncé or other collaborators will appear, though past headliners have invited major stars.
Last year's halftime show featured Bad Bunny, with cameos from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin. That performance won seven Creative Arts Emmys this year, becoming the most awarded halftime show in history. Both Bad Bunny and Jay-Z served as producers and received individual Emmy awards. Kendrick Lamar also won an Emmy for his 2025 headlining performance.
Oliver Schusser, Apple's vice president of music and international content, told fans to expect an "incredible show." He described Jay-Z's impact on global music culture as "as profound as it is undeniable." The production team has not yet revealed a setlist or additional performers.
